Mykonos: Iconic, Overhyped, or Both? ☀️🇬🇷 Let’s Talk
Mykonos is one of the most famous islands in the world—and to be honest, it kind of earns it. It has gorgeous beaches, legendary parties, and those postcard-perfect alleyways. But as someone who's been there and done that, let’s just say… I have thoughts.
So here’s a rundown of what to expect, what not to fall for, and what to actually do—whether you’re in it for the clubs, the calm, or just the crystal-clear sea.
🗓️ When to Go: Hot, Expensive, and Packed
July and August are peak season—also known as:
Hottest time ☀️
Most expensive 💸
Busiest crowds 😮💨
If you're going then, book early. Everything from hotels to beach chairs sells out—and prices jump fast.
🏝️ Exploring the Island: More Than Just Parties
🌀 Why the Labyrinth Vibes?
You might’ve noticed that Mykonos town (Chora) feels like a maze. That’s on purpose—built in the 18th century to confuse invading pirates. Iconic.
Here are the key areas to explore:
Alefkhandra (Little Venice): With its Venetian-style balconies, windmills on the hill, and the island’s oldest church, it’s charming and scenic.
Ano Mera: A quieter, more local-feeling village inland.
Chora (Mykonos Town): The beating heart of the island—shops, restaurants, and nightlife galore.
Windmills: Once there were 16, now only 5 remain—but they’re very Instagrammable.
🦂 Fun fact: Blue was historically painted everywhere to ward off scorpions—and yes, it's also the color of the Greek flag.
🍽️ Prices & Dining
Average main dishes at good restaurants: €18–€25
At the most popular or upscale spots: €30–€45
Tip: You don’t have to eat fancy to eat well. Some of the best meals are in small tavernas away from the crowd.
🏖️ Beaches: Choose Your Own Vibe
Mykonos has the most beaches of any Greek island—and yes, that includes both fancy day-club beaches andsurprisingly low-key public ones.
🌊 Popular Beaches:
Super Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach
Psarou – very pricey, celeb-studded
Elia – beautiful, but note: lots of nudity
Kalafatis, Megali Ammos – more chill
💡 Tip: Research beach vibes before you go. Want music and bottle service? Or peace and privacy? Know what you’re getting into.
🎉 Most beach parties have free entry—you just pay for drinks.
🧭 Getting Around
Public shuttles go from the town center to many beaches
Taxis are rare and expensive, don’t rely on them
Best bet? Rent an ATV or small car—but book in advance, especially in high season
🐦 The Famous Pelican of Mykonos (Yes, Really)
Back in the 1950s, a pelican was rescued after a storm and became the island’s unofficial mascot: Petros. He became so beloved that when he passed away in the 1980s, they brought in replacements. You might spot one walking through town like a local.
📍You can even see the original Petros (stuffed) at the Folk Museum in Mykonos Town.
💭 Final Thoughts: Worth It?
Mykonos offers something for everyone: wild parties, chic beach clubs, quiet villages, family-friendly beaches, luxury dining, and free public coastline.
But here’s my honest take:
Yes, it’s beautiful. Yes, it’s fun. Yes, it’s expensive. And yes… it’s windy. Like, aggressively windy.
Would I go again? Sure—if the opportunity came up, I’d say yes. But is it the most magical place on Earth? Not for me.
So if you’re thinking of going—go. But go with your eyes open. And maybe, just maybe… pack a windbreaker.
